Tips to Properly Take Care of Your Hare
Caring for a rabbit is a lot different from traditional pets because they have a lot of special needs and requirements that other pets don’t have. If it is in your mind to have a rabbit for a pet, the need to take the steps to learn how to take care of one first. Here are some tips to help you get started:
Rabbit Hutch
Ideally, your rabbit’s cage should be at least 4 times larger than your rabbit, but bigger is always better especially if it will spend most of its time inside the cage. The floor of the cage should always be solid. Lots of people still use cages that have wire floors in them with removable pads on the bottom as this makes them easier to clean, but these types of cages often cause sores on the rabbits feet and can lead to many problems. If you are using a cage that has a wire floor, then you need to cover it with a sisal mat or grass, or even a piece of wood.
What Rabbits Eat
You need to make sure that you have a pretty much unlimited supply of grass hay for feed such as brome or timothy. This is a primary part of your rabbits diet, and it truly helps to keep your rabbit healthy by ensuring that it has a clean intestinal tract. You will also need to keep a supply of quality rabbit pellets on hand. Younger rabbits (under 6 months old) should eat pellets that contain at least 18% fiber and 15% to 19% protein. As a third part of your rabbits diet, you’re going to need to feed it plenty of dark leafy green vegetables such as collard greens, carrots tops, lettuce, and turnip greens. At least 2 cups of leaves should be given for 6 pounds of rabbit. You should always keep fresh water on hand at all times.
Training Your Rabbit to Use the Litter Box
For the most part, rabbits have a tendency to use one part of its cage for its toilet. When your rabbit decides which area of its cage it wants to use, you need to fill that area with pelleted newspaper litter, or some type of hay. You need to make sure that you claim it’s litter box each and every day to keep the odors down.
Keeping the Cage Cleaned
Make sure that you clean your rabbits cage once a week. When you are cleaning its cage you need to put your rabbit in a safe area. Sweep the floor to remove any solid debris. Whenever you clean and scrub the cage floor, make sure that you use soap and warm water.
Handling Your Rabbit
Improper handling of your rabbit can cause injury. Never pick up a rabbit by its ears. When you pick up a rabbit, make sure that you use one hand to support its front legs and the other its back legs.
