If you’re a writer, you have no doubt experienced writers block. No matter what you do, you just can’t find the right angle. Many writers, in fact, have writer’s block more often than they don’t! In an eight hour day, six of them are spent staring at a blank computer screen. Here is one good way to get past those blocks.

One technique this writer and many others have used is to put aside that project for a moment and do some creative writing to get your juices flowing again. Without any intention of actually finishing them, you could start a series of suspense books. That’s a great genre, because it’s exciting, engaging and allows you to let your imagination soar.

Remember, you don’t have to write a masterpiece. Just write about whatever pops into your head. If you need an idea, look around you and pick the first thing you see. You might have a stack of handmade scrapbooking papers, for instance. A sheet of hand made paper is a perfect start!

Now write an opening paragraph using a sheet of that paper as part of the story. ‘It was just another day, ‘ you begin, ‘like any other day, until a single sheet of handmade paper was slipped under the door.’ What was written on that piece of paper? Was it from a debt collector or was it from a secret admirer?

That mysterious note will trigger more fantasies in your mind. Go with them! Say that note was from a woman who wants to arrange an erotic rendezvous. Should you take her up on it or is she luring you into a trap? You can’t resist the temptation, but you’re going to have to take some precautions.

Now, here is where you set aside your suspense thriller and get back to your assignment. Have it open, so you can do it immediately. Now that your creative juices are flowing again, you should be able to find an idea for your article. Let’s say you’re writing a Giro Ski Helmet product description. Your character needs the equivalent of a protective helmet. Write that article as if you were your character and you need to know everything there is to know about that helmet because your life depends on it!

You will be surprised at how well this technique works! If you’re writing somebody’s thesis, you’ll find a way to fit the thesis into your plot. Some of the best thrillers ever written were about technical themes like the chemistry of perfume. Try it! It’s fun and is a guaranteed way to get over writer’s block!
